Your First Visit

Here's what to expect when you come in — so you can arrive relaxed and prepared.

Three Steps to Healing

Dr. Li's approach is built on deep listening. Your first visit is longer than a typical appointment — it's a comprehensive conversation about who you are, not just what hurts.

1

Detailed Consultation

Your first visit begins with an in-depth conversation. Dr. Li takes the time to understand your full picture — not just the presenting complaint, but the whole person.

She will ask about:

  • Your current health concerns and symptoms
  • Complete medical history and prior treatments
  • Sleep patterns and energy levels
  • Diet and digestion
  • Emotional wellbeing and stress levels
  • Menstrual and reproductive history (for women's health concerns)
  • Family health history

She also uses Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnostic methods: observation (tongue, complexion), listening, questioning, and pulse-taking — each providing insight into your internal balance.

2

Personalized Treatment Plan

Based on your consultation, Dr. Li creates a treatment plan specific to your constitution, pattern, and goals — never a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Your plan may include:

  • Acupuncture session frequency and focus points
  • Chinese herbal formula tailored to your TCM pattern
  • Dietary adjustments based on your constitution
  • Sleep hygiene and lifestyle recommendations
  • At-home acupressure or self-care practices
  • Cupping, moxibustion, or bodywork as needed

Dr. Li will explain the plan in full, answer your questions, and make sure you understand the "why" behind each recommendation.

3

Gentle, Sustainable Healing

TCM works with your body's own healing capacity — results build over time rather than masking symptoms with a quick fix. Most treatment courses span several weeks to a few months depending on your condition.

What to expect during your treatment journey:

  • Regular sessions (often weekly at first, then tapering)
  • Ongoing check-ins to assess your progress
  • Adjustments to the plan as your body responds
  • Open communication — always let Dr. Li know how you're feeling
  • Gradual, lasting improvements in how you feel day to day

Many patients notice changes in energy, sleep, or mood within the first few sessions, with deeper improvements developing over the course of treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are hair-thin — much finer than a hypodermic needle. You may feel a brief moment of sensation when a needle is inserted, followed by a sense of heaviness, warmth, or relaxation. Many patients fall asleep during treatment.
How long is a typical session?
Your first visit (including consultation and treatment) will last approximately 75–90 minutes. Follow-up sessions are typically 50–60 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by condition. Acute issues may resolve in 4–6 sessions, while chronic conditions often benefit from 8–12 sessions or more. Dr. Li will give you a realistic estimate after your initial consultation.
Can I continue my current medications?
Yes — acupuncture and TCM herbs are often used alongside conventional treatments. Always inform Dr. Li of any medications or supplements you are taking so she can customize your care safely.
Do you offer services in Chinese?
Yes. Dr. Li is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and is happy to conduct consultations and treatment in either English or Chinese — whichever is most comfortable for you.
